Humnawaz

The Brief

Humnawaz was a musical drama serial for DD National that placed music and song sequences at the heart of every episode. The production required an edit team that could not only handle the drama editorial but also manage the music integration — synchronising live performance footage with studio-recorded music tracks, handling playback sequences, and delivering a final mix that elevated the musical identity of the show.

The Challenge

Musical serials introduce editorial complexities absent in pure drama: playback footage rarely syncs perfectly to the recorded track on the first pass, requiring frame-accurate matching and creative editorial work to sell the performance. Multiple angles of a song sequence need to be cut rhythmically to the music rather than driven by dialogue, which requires editors who understand musical phrasing and beat. The music mix itself needed careful balancing — music levels that work under dialogue, levels that allow songs to soar — within a single broadcast-compliant audio file.

Our Approach

We assigned our most experienced audio post specialist to Humnawaz as the project's sound supervisor from day one. Rather than treating audio as a finishing step, the music stems were integrated into the editing timeline early, allowing the editor to cut picture to music during assembly rather than fitting music to a locked cut. This produced significantly more natural-feeling song sequences.

For the final mix, we developed a ducking and levelling approach that allowed dialogue scenes to maintain clarity while song sequences could be presented at full, broadcast-compliant levels. The result was a sonically distinct show that stood out among DD National's drama slate.

The Outcome

Humnawaz completed its full broadcast run on schedule. The production team specifically praised the quality of the music integration, and the show's audio quality received positive feedback from the broadcaster's technical review team. A Plus Edits was recommended by the production company to three subsequent projects within the same genre.
